Energise Africa wins prestigious UN Award

Energise Africa is awarded an United Nations Global Climate Action Award ahead of COP26

Today (6th October) The United Nations has announced the winners of the special 10th-anniversary edition of the UN Global Climate Action Awards and we are incredibly excited to reveal that Energise Africa is one of 11 recipients of the prestigious global award.

The UN Global Climate Action Awards is an annual award programme that has been run by United Nations Climate Change since 2011. The awards seek to recognise the world’s most innovative, scalable and replicable examples of action to tackle climate change, so we feel very honoured that our work is being recognised as part of these 10th-anniversary awards.

Energise Africa is one of four winners in the Financing for Climate Friendly Investment category and we are being recognised for our investing platform that has enabled thousands of everyday people in the UK to put their money to work for climate action and the SDGs, raising over £25 million to date to support renewable energy projects in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. This is all made possible by our community of investors who are using their money to tackle climate change and improve lives in Africa. Energise Africa's success has also been supported by our funding partners UK aid, Good Energies Foundation and P4G.

The Awards announcement comes just ahead of the pivotal UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26) in Glasgow and is part of the wider effort to mobilize action and ambition ahead of the summit.

UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa says:
“This past year, we have seen deadly wildfires and floods in many parts of the world. The report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in August rang the alarm bells, showing that the world is warming faster than scientists previously thought. And the new synthesis report of national climate action plans (NDCs) released recently confirmed that unfortunately, we are moving in the wrong direction. We urgently require solutions and actions from everyone: public and private sectors, civil society, academia, investors, cities and regions, etc.
The winners of the 2021 UN Global Climate Action Awards provide tangible proof that solutions to tackle the climate crisis exist and that they can be replicated and quickly scaled up. This is what inspiring leadership looks like.”

Lisa Ashford, CEO of Energise Africa commented:
“The whole team at Energise Africa are delighted that our work has been recognised by the UN in this way. We’re on a mission to mobilise billions in people-powered finance to bring affordable clean energy to all and accelerate a transition to a low carbon society. This UN Climate Action award provides us with a fantastic platform through which we can engage with multiple stakeholders and potential partners to demonstrate how our unique solution is getting capital to flow to sustainable businesses, communities and climate-vulnerable countries and how this can be rapidly scaled in order to deliver on the goals of the Paris Agreement.”
